2018-AUSMUMPRENEUR-AWARDS nominee buttonMel James, Director of Social Care Solutions, has been nominated for the 2018 AusMumpreneur Awards.

The AusMumpreneur Awards, presented by The AusMumpreneur Network, celebrate and recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.

Mel started Social Care Solutions in 2009 simply with a desire to provide high quality independent foster care assessments to ensure better outcomes for children in care. The ability to work from home with flexible hours was a draw card when Mel was considering how she would raise a family while still remaining in her chosen career; a social worker in the child protection industry. Her drive to provide outstanding quality assessments, training and consultancy to government and not-for-profit agencies in the industry led her to where she is today; leading the Social Care Solutions team of more than 30 practitioners across three States, all of whom are equally as passionate as Mel about improving the everyday lives of children and young people involved in the foster care system.

There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood as Mel explains, “I love having the ability to be present and available for my own young children while contributing to the care and wellbeing of other people’s children when in the out-of-home care system. I’m in a unique and privileged position to be able to work for myself, doing the work I love, while still being able to be present for school events, kindy days and other special moments that matter in my family”.

It can be challenging to be a successful business woman whilst raising a family and Mel gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise, “Ensure you have found a ‘gap’ where you will meet a need with your service or product, then find people to give guidance about how to set up a business; from finance, HR, strategic planning, networking etc. This will help with providing a foundation for a great business model”.

Round 1 voting for the awards runs from 11 to 27 July 2018 with finalists announced on Friday 3 August. The final round of voting runs from 5 to 19 August 2018 with the winners of the 2018 AusMumpreneur Awards announced at a glamorous Awards dinner in Melbourne this August.
